The Roundtown Classic: A Decade Later

Annual 5k celebrates 10th year.

Each year on the third Saturday in July, more than 275 people lineup for the Roundtown Classic at Mary Virginia Crites Hannan Park in Circleville. This Five Mile/5k run and walk are presented by The Circleville High School Alumni Association. The event supports scholarships for Circleville High School graduates, funds for academic activities and helps finance a project each year for the park.

The Roundtown Classic’s roots trace back to 2008, when the Circleville Alumni Association Board of Directors formed a race committee. Ace Elsea was selected to lead the committee with the support of Andi Humphries, Julie Scherer, Don Wolford, Tom Strawser, Ty Ankrom and Don Leist. Since its inception, Ace has been at the helm of the committee which meets each month.  In addition to the main race committee, 33 sub-committees have been created which manage the 55 to 60 volunteers needed to operate the event throughout the year.

The first year the race was held on July 17, 2009, and the course was not completely in the community park. The race started in the park and ventured on to the township streets. Due to the increased traffic congestion from closed roads, the event moved entirely to the park the following year.

This year, organizers will be celebrating the tenth anniversary of the event. Over the past nine years, the Classic has seen nearly 2,500 participants and grossed $150,000 for its causes. The 2018 race will be held Saturday, July 21, at 8 a.m., followed by the Don Leist Kids Fun Run, for children up to age ten, at 9:30 a.m..
