Update: The event hosted 588 participants and raised $6,500 for the Ashville Food Pantry.
Scioto Elementary in the Teays Valley Local School District is looking to dash hunger this Thursday, May 17. They will aim to do it by hosting the Viking 5k which is raising money for the Ashville Food Pantry. For four years, Scioto students in grades 3-5 and their families have hosted the walk and run to promote healthy lifestyles while supporting meaningful causes.
In 2017, the event raised money for the Commercial Point Police Department. With hundreds of runners involved the students were able to donate $2,500. This year, they hope to exceed that total by expanding the event to include seventh grade students from West Middle School.
This year’s beneficiary, the Ashville Food Pantry, is located at 94 Long St., Ashville, beside First English Lutheran Church. Open the second and fourth Thursday of each month from noon to 4 p.m., the pantry provides free food for those in need that live in the Teays Valley School District. With an uptick in pantry usage, Scioto Elementary chose the organization in order to help maintain their programs and facilities.
The cross-country style course begins at the West Middle School football field before traveling around the school’s Commercial Point property and ending where the race started. While the event itself is only open to students and their families, the community can donate online to the cause. As of May 15, the website is showing $965 in donations from 66 donors. Information on donations can be found at https://runsignup.com/Race/Donate/OH/CommercialPoint/SciotoElementaryViking5K.
Sponsors for the event are Scioto Elementary PTO, Notary One Mobile Signature Services, Spencer Aviation, Hay Farms, James Cline Studios, Tom and Julie Lapcevic, Bart Fannon & Family Farms, Locker 22, Lucky Bones, Gant’s, Vinton County National Bank, Wasem Electric, Greenlawn RV, Commercial Point Community Men’s Club and Kroger.
